Cayman Islands After Beryl
posted (July 4, 2024)

And going back now to Hurricane Beryl, here are some videos at dusk from Corozal where you can see the ominous clouds on the horizon the north and light rain right now in that northern town. Our team is there and we'll keep you posted.

But, looking back at the storm, we have been sharing nightly the destructive path of hurricane the hurricane which churned past Jamaica yesterday and made landfall early this morning on the Cayman Islands. Shantel Neal spoke to the owner of a local news outlet:

Hurricane Berly made landfall at 2:00 this morning as a Category 3 hurricane with devastating winds of 125 mph and was about 110 miles southeast of Grand Cayman - the largest of the Cayman Islands. Today we spoke to Sandy Hill, Editor and Owner of Cayman Marl Road Local News who shared her experience and how important preparations were in weathering the storm.

"To be honest it sort of started to move a little south of us at the last minute to which we were incredibly thankful for and as it turns out most of us probably slept right through it. It came early in the morning hours by the time we started to get up there was still quite a bit of wind and rain. People were obviously concerned about that. but it honestly did not do a whole lot of damage but we've seen some damage in the south side in an area called South Sound other than that which is relatively minor I think we all feared really well."

"We've learnt from our previous lesson for example with hurricane Ivan. You can never over prepare and sometimes we all try to be amateur meteorologists if you will. Oh that storm isn't going to come, we're just going to pray it away. We have these ideas in our head but the truth of the matter is, we just never know. We always have a saying that says prepare for the worst and pray for the best."

At about 2:00 pm today, Premiere Juliana Yvonne O'Connor-Connolly issued the all clear.

"We are taking this opportunity to say that they all are now given for the island of Grand Cayman which makes it an all clear that we gave this morning for Cayman Brac, little Cayman at 9:am as of now there's an immediate all clear."

At 6:00 pm today, Beryl was located about 180miles east southeast of Tulum.
