Historic Dominance For PUP In Toledo East By-Election
posted (July 18, 2024)

Toledo East is bluer than it has ever been in a historic landslide victory for Osmond Martinez last night.

Historic because he garnered 70% of the vote in the by-election. This in a constituency that historically has been close - except in 2020 - when Mike Espat got 61% of the vote.

But, with 70% - Martinez joins an elite club of only three other current PUP area reps who got more than that.

And while his support was historic, turnout was relatively low. 4,670 voters came out to cast their ballot, out of over 7,700 registered Toledo East electors. The southern residents had three choices: PUP's Dr Osmond Martinez, UDP's Dennis "Desho" Williams, and PNP's Wil Maheia.

The polling station that had the highest voter turnout was Martinez's home village of Bella Vista with 1,650.

Between 2 to 3 in the afternoon was when the highest number of voters - 529 - came out.

And while Dr Martinez received 3,269 votes, Williams got 1,159, while Maheia received 202.
