Chester on the Campaign Trail ,But Not "Campaigning"
posted (July 18, 2024)

And while Dr Martinez and his entourage of PUP politicians were traveling between Toledo East's villages, they were trailed by the Commissioner of Police. He started his day off in Punta Gorda, where he took breakfast at the same restaurant as the ministers. Then we caught up with him again in Forest Home at the PUP tent. And he was along with the PM in Bella Vista, probably joining in on the birthday celebrations. So we asked him whether he was helping with the campaign trail.

And we weren't the only ones that noticed - the question was put to him again later in the night.

Reporter:
"This morning you were having breakfast with the mayor of Punta Gorda Town, then you were at the polling station in Forest Home with your minister, Kareem, and now you're here over by the PUP side, one might think you're campaigning along with them when you probably should be remaining neutral."

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"That is Channel 7 narrative."

Reporter:
"Sir, I'm just pointing out my observations."

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I expect nothing different. Channel 7 always have a way of twisting things how they want it and I can't take your opinion away from you. The Mayor of Punta Gorda Town is my personal friend, I have known him before he became the mayor of Punta Gorda Town, I have stayed at his house, he has stayed at my house before he was mayor. We are like brothers. My Minister is my boss and again I am entitled to be wherever he is and again if you want to speak of me being here in Bella Vista while the prime minister is here, the prime minister is the prime minister of this country. If it is I need to go where the prime minister is to make sure that he's safe that is a part of my duties as well. So please don't twist the narrative and say it is a matter of campaigning, I don't think you see me approaching voters and telling them to vote this way or vote that way, throwing out any political slogans or anything of that sort. While I may in the presence of people who are politicians, it does not mean that I am campaigning, I have also stood with prominent UDP members as well, why not say that I am campaigning for UDP too?"

Reporter:
"What's your role in all of this, only because I heard a question come up earlier that you were basically hanging around mostly PUP ministers and representatives and candidates."

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"Why when Channel 7 asked something you piggyback on it? You want be like Jules, you want to copycat Jules?"

Reporter:
"Sir, that's not the question."

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
I'm not going to answer stupid questions.

Reporter:
"Sir but if something were to happen at the UDP stand, would you have been there seeing as though you were literally keeping close to the PUP politicians."

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I took a picture with Shyne, see. Good, that answers your question."
