Glenford Ebanks, Eye witness
"Earlier I saw a flash just a sudden flash and then afterwards a bang by the thunder right and when I looked over to the runway for the airport I noticed a big blaze, a big fire. I said that was because of the, some construction workers told me that it was because of the thunderbolt that dropped over there beside the runway in the dry grasses."

"No we didn't see any fire engine, then afterwards a big excavator began digging, probably covering the area with sand."

"I think it's because the place was wet, the fire just came into the wet area and disappeared."

The Airport Authority says that anytime they get severe thunderstorms and a lightning warning from the Met Office - the airport apron is cleared and the airport closed until the warning is lifted - which happened at 1:17 pm today.
