It was in this yard just after 10:30 last night that 25 year old Carlso Canelo came under fire, in the darkness on Rio Grande Street Orange Walk Town. A relative close to Canelo says that she was in the house, just a stone's throw away from where it happened but in fear for her life and the thickness of the gun smoke outside the window, she was unable to see where Canelo's killer emerged from.

"He told me he was going to go and buy a burger to eat and came back and sit down out there I don't know who he was sitting with. He went behind there and shortly after I heard bang bang bang. And when I looked out I saw smoke. I couldn't see who shot him or what. All I know is I sat in my house and well in this house for a little while and when I came out I saw Carlos laid out so with a pool of blood around his head. Only that I could tell you, I called for him, "Pero! Pero!" And he didn't answer me and that's what made it worse. When I put on my flash I saw he was in a pool of blood."

Up to six - 40 calibre expended shells and 3 slugs were found at the scene- a high powered prohibited weapon often used in targeted street killings. Canelo's relative says that he was lodging with her for only a few months, but he had previously mentioned that he had gotten into some problems with certain people living in the area. Canelo is the second person to be shot and killed in this area in just over a month. 60 year Norman Gillet was also shot and killed walking into his yard on July 1st on Monkey River Street - which is one house away from where Canelo was targeted.

One person was charged in connection to Gillet's murder.

Police are now searching for Canelo's murder.

Reports say Canelo may have been a witness in the murder a month before. We should not as subtext that the general area is known to be a hotspot for marijuana sales.
