After 73 Years, Belize's Oldest Bakery Moves Into New Digs
posted (September 2, 2024)
It may be the oldest bakery in the city but the place most people call "Sunny and Tan" has moved into new digs.

They have moved their operation after 72 years. We found out more on a visit to the bakery. Jomarie Lanza reports.

Established 72 years ago, Sunny Side Bakery- formerly Sunny and Tan is moving into a new location.

It's the first time in the bakery's storied history that it has moved from its Racecourse street base where its founder Zebedee Pitterson was well known in the community.

Now his grand daughter is taking the reigns at a new location at the corner of Central American Boulevard and Banak Street:

"So this new location, this is something that my dad built and what he started and we just made sure that we finished it."

"So this building is dedicated to him, Elon Peterson, and he taught us everything that we knew. My dad was the one who continued the legacy of my grandfather for 17 years after he retired and we continue it now for three years."

And now the legendary Sunny Side bakery is hoping that this new location will house them for another three generations.

"Eventually we'll expand into doing croissants and breakfast in the morning, but right now we're starting with our usual stuff, with our donuts, cinnamon roll, powder bun, jam roll, you know, etc."

"And we'll still have our bun, bread, wheat bread, unsliced bread, and so on. Our signature favorites."

"And with the new location, do you notice more customers come here other than the old location?"

Christiana Pitterson, Sunny Side Bakery
"Well, not as yet. I mean, we just opened, but as you see, people are coming in and we're very grateful for that. So we'll see what time will tell. So yeah."

The bakery opened today.
