The north end of Ambergris Caye is notorious for narco activity - and on Sunday, the Coast Guard came upon some tools of the trade.
They say that while on patrol near Deer Caye, which is north west of Ambergris Caye, they seized a cache of drugs, ammunition, and two high powered rifles. They uncovered a white cooler covered with a gray canvas, with a black plastic bag inside. The black plastic bag contained 3 parcels of suspected cannabis, wrapped in transparent plastic, a black AR-15 rifle, along with an empty magazine, an AK-47 semi-automatic rifle with an empty magazine, and 21 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.
No one was within the area at the time the items were found. All articles were handed over to the police.
Drug gangs are known to operate in this area combing the beaches and the seas for wet drop intended for Mexican cartels in Quintana Roo.
