In October of 2022, one-time Belizean politician Francis Gegg was caught at the New Delhi airport in India with 22 pounds of heroin concealed in a carry-on bag with a false bottom.
Well, he's still in jail there and Gegg, who is now 72 years old was today denied bail by the New Dehli High Court.
A report from an Indian newspaper said Gegg had sought bail on the grounds that the conditions for searching a person had not been complied with. The argument was that searches for drugs must be on the person's body, not their baggage. But the Court held that the search was legal and denied bail, noting that the accused was at flight risk as he was a foreign national.
On October 30, 2022, Gegg was travelling to India from Johannesburg via Doha when he was intercepted by a Customs officer at Delhi airport. A search of his bags led to the discovery of the heroin.
The court observed that it, quote,"cannot persuade itself to believe that there are reasonable grounds to believe that he is not prima facie guilty of the alleged offence under NPDS Act."
