Solid Waste Management In Disarray After Director Sent Home
posted (October 2, 2024)
A still undisclosed amount of money - rumoured to be in the six figure range - was allegedly pilfered from The Solid Waste Management Authority and discovered back in June. The Director has been sent home pending investigation.

But, since then the Authority seems to have fallen into a state of operational disarray and we have seen transfer stations across the country overrun with garbage.

In Belize City, it's quickly reaching a crisis point where the garbage at the mile three transfer station was not picked up for all of September!

So, tonight, the waste at that location is piled high and awaiting transfer to the regional landfill. And because it's combustible, it's becoming a concern for City Hall. We understand two trucks were sent in today to try to start clearing the large accumulation.

According to our reports, there is a dispute with the contractor who transfers the waste and that is what's causing the backup.
