posted (October 7, 2024)
He was convicted of the murder of of 37 year old Leslie "Dimes" Gillett, back in June. And, today, 23 year old Earl Baptist was given a fixed sentence.

Justice Sylvester put the starting point at 25 years and he added 2 years because of the aggravating factors, which included a lack of remorse, that it was unprovoked and that it was an execution style murder.

However, he subtracted 2 years because of the mitigating factors which consisted of his age and the factor of rehabilitation. So Baptist's sentence amounted to 25 Years, less the time of 2 years that he has spent on remand, which puts it at 23 years.

The murder occurred in January of 2022 at Mathilda Shop, located in Burrell Boom Village where Gillett was the proprietor.

Gillett was inside his shop when two men approached the window with burglar bars and after one of them pretended to buy, they drew pistols and opened fire on Gillett, killing him instantly. When Gilett was killed, he reportedly had his gun holstered at his side.

The incident was captured on video camera and the footage was used as evidence at the trial.

We note that two months earlier, two of Gillett's employees, Kendra Miguel and Dennis Brown were also shot and killed in his store. The three killings are thought to be part of the same dispute.

Attorney Leeroy Banner represented Baptist. The Crown was represented by Crown Counsel Shanell Fernandez.
