Multinational Security Initiative In Haiti Continues With US Support
posted (October 8, 2024)
And the US is also playing a role in the multinational security support mission to Haiti. Two of Belize's soldiers are currently a part of the contingent. The UN Security Council recently re-authorized the deployment of the mission for another 12 months.

Nichols gave us an update on the mission and the progress being made.

Brian Nichols, Assistant Secretary, US State Dept.
"September 30th, the mandate for the Multinational Security Support Mission was renewed. We had a ministerial meeting chaired by Secretary Blinken along with then Council President Leblanc, Prime Minister Conille of Haiti, and the Foreign Minister and National Security advisor of Kenya and about 30 foreign ministers from around the world to talk about Haiti during high level week at the UN General Assembly, additional countries pledged support for the mission, contributions of police, of military, of equipment, and financial contributions that are very important for the mission's success. In Haiti we've just seen presidency of the transitional presidential council rotate successfully, that's a big step forward, we've seen progress in the naming of a Provisional Electoral Council that will prepare for elections next year in Haiti, we've seen the reconstitution of the higher level courts there so things are moving forward in Haiti but there are enormous challenges there as well and we need to stand together as a hemisphere and an international community to help the Haitian people."
