Shaping Society Through Statistics, SIB Looks For Blind Spots
posted (October 18, 2024)
Today the Statistical Institute of Belize held a data user conference at the Biltmore with over 50 stakeholders who benefit from the use of their data in attendance. The purpose of the conference is to promote the use of statistics for decision making and discover where the SIB's blind spots are. Here's what we gathered from the conference.

Diana Castillo, Director General, SIB
"Well today's event is the final and biggest event that the SIB is hosting this week in observance of Caribbean Statistics day so we started the week off with an exhibition where we highlighted with about 15 of our other data producing partners some of the good work and innovations that's happening in the field of statistics in Belize and today's event is our data users conference and this is a forum for us to engage with users of our data from government to private sectors to academia to hear from them as to what their data needs are and how we can better meet them as well as to share with them what we are working on the types of data we have and some of the innovations that are taking place with data in Belize."

"Admittedly there are a number of data gaps that we ourselves are aware of but through the discussions here this morning there have been a few more that have been identified for us so for example it was highlighted that we need to engage not only with data users at the policy making level but also with governments at the local level because at the local level where we are doing on the ground work to improve the lives of persons in their municipalities there is also a need for data so that is one very important feedback that we have taken and we will be taking into account and adjusting how we engage or making the way we engage with our data users more inclusive."
