Low Lying Cayo Bridges Went Underwater
posted (October 21, 2024)
Of course, while the storm passed quickly and without most of us even batting an eye, the heavy rains it produced, and which continue in its trail are making news tonight.

Right now, in the west the Mopan and Macal Rivers are under "flood warning" while the San Igancio and Iguana Creek low lying bridges are impassable.

We spoke to the Mayor of San Ignacio about the flooding effect in his town:

Earl Trapp, Mayor, San Ignacio
"In San Ignacio, thankfully, thanks to God, you know, we didn't get much damage. It's just more torrential rains that affected us. The water rose to a level just behind the market area, and it proceeded yesterday, and again, it's rising because of the waters up on the hills."

Jules Vasquez
"With the low-lying bridge, should we at some point have to phazed out that bridge completely?"

Earl Trapp, Mayor, San Ignacio
"I would hope that that bridge will continue to be a part of us, because of the convenience that it brings to the people, and as well the economics part of it when it comes to the taxi operators."

"If taxis are supposed to go all the way around, they're going to charge people more. So I believe that at some point in time, the bridge must be restored, and I think if it can be built at least eight feet higher, like take the approach farther out, it would be a bridge that would be passable 95% of the times that we have torrential rains."
