San Ignacio Mayor Publicly Scolds UDP Councillor
posted (October 22, 2024)
And while the Belize City mayor wants Starbucks, San Ignacio's mayor is ok with public gambling in the market.

As you may have seen on last night's news - Mayor Earl Trapp is kinda torn on which bridge to cross and which to burn in the divided UDP. But he has a lot more clarity when it comes to publicly reprimanding one of his own UDP councilors.

That councilor is Abdel Cowo and on Saturday he publicly grumbled in a Santa Elena chat group that that there is gambling at the market and there is no license displayed. He said he was outrightly objecting to it, but then added, quote, "they have the mayor and OC on their side, so I. am coming to the public" end quote.

That's strong talk about your own UDP Mayor and yesterday that mayor told us Cowo didn't come to him - and in fact, there's a whole lot he doesn't do:

Earl Trapp, Mayor - San Ignacio
"I have not received any concern from any market vendor, so I am not sure what it is with him and this market all of a sudden, noh? When he will say that the guy operating the gambling place there is taking advantage of the people, I wouldn't say it that way, Mr Jules. I think like anywhere else in the world, poor people try to turn $1 into $10."

"We are not holding a gun to their head and say,"go and gamble".No. The same thing, it's just more convenient that they are just there and try to gamble a five dollars and they go, rather than go to Casino and things like that, but, I mean, we live in a free country and people do what they want, I mean that's just a habit. Some people smoke, some other people drink alcohol and some other people choose to gamble."

"I don't know, Mr Jules, I don't know, we have not really done, I am not sure that we're doing anything wrong."

Jules Vasquez
"This 3 shell business is inherently fraudulent. Now all gambling you will lose, the house always wins, we know that, but, "three shell" is not regulated, it's not coming under the gaming commission. It's not licensed, and there's a reason for that."

Earl Trapp, Mayor - San Ignacio
"He has a. license. He has a license. To perform gambling to perform gambling in different areas. He has a license. I can,I can get a screenshot of the license and send it to you."

Jules Vasquez
"And should that be happening in the public in the daytime in front of children, or persons who are more vulnerable?"

Earl Trapp, Mayor - San Ignacio
"Mr Jules when you go to the municipal fair, and you see people gambling there, you have children, you have different walks of life there, soI'm not sure how it affects one in terms of encouraging them take it as a habit, I mean, you're free to decide what you want."

"What we can do,I'll discuss it with the manager and see if maybe we place him in a corner of something, but I, I don't really…"

Jules Vasquez
"Is your councillor out of line on this, going into a chat group and saying that he doesn't uphold it. But the mayor upholds it so it persists."

Earl Trapp, Mayor - San Ignacio
"Mr Jules I would say yes, because he in person have never one day said to me Mayor I think this is wrong. Some people just wants attention and if they want attention they supposed to do more. You have your portfolio, you are supposed to work your portfolio. That is what they supposed to do. I mean this is totally uncalled for."

Jules Vasquez
"But this is your UDP colleague."

Earl Trapp, Mayor - San Ignacio
"And that is the sad part about it. That is the reason why we have so much division amongst us right now, because too mnuch envy, too much hate. I mean he is one of the first ones that said from the day that we were being sworn in, the same moment we came from downstairs to upstairs - mayor, next time I will run for mayor, He doesnt even start working yet. But those are the things, if he wants support then he needs to work for it."

"And this is not the correct way of getting attention, go do some work out there and get attention and don't be complaining about these minor things. We have a lot of work to do in the town."

Councilor Cowo told us that he has already approached the lotteries commission to shut down the operations and that they have pledged support. We note that the mayor says Cowo is the councilor with responsibility for the Child Advisory Board.
