PUP Chairman Isn't Worried About Shyne's Visit To Chinese Embassy
posted (October 24, 2024)

And while the PUP aren't taking sides in the "2-DP" war, the media asked Minister Usher whether it was concerning that Barrow admittedly visited the Chinese Embassy in Jamaica. Here's his response:

Henry Charles Usher, Minister of Public Service
"The leader of the opposition does not represent the government or the people of the Belize so if he wants to go to any embassy, that is his business. Taiwan has remained a good friend to our country. We are good partners for 35 years now. That is why at the previous House meeting to the one last Friday, there was a resolution passed supporting, enhancing and really promoting the relationship between Belize and Taiwan on the friendship between Belize and Taiwan. It was unfortunate that the leader of the opposition abstained from voting on supporting that resolution. We know why he did that now. He said that he wanted to go back to his party. Well now he has to explain to his party why he went to that particular embassy when he traveled to Jamaica. So really, it's an issue for the UDP to try to come forward with a unified position because we know some members are totally against what he did and they have to work that out, but he does not speak for the government or the people of Belize that I can tell you."
