Quietly, Elon Musk's Internet service provider has applied to the PUC to become an internet Service Provider in Belize. The application has been published in the papers and is currently pending approval. Belize is listed on the Starlink website as "coming soon".
It could be a real game changer in Belize - but the Belize Communications Workers Union - which composes BTL employees - has written a strong letter of objection to the PUC. That letter says, quote, "if the Starlink application is approved, it could have significant negative impacts on the telecom industry, the broader community, and current and future job security in Belize." End quote.
The letter explains, quote, "allowing Starlink to enter into our already saturated telecom market could undermine the job security of local employees at Belize Telemedia Limited and other Service Providers in Belize" They also note that Starlink's market entry would negatively impact the investments made by the Government of Belize and the Social Security Board in BTL."
We'll see what the PUC's response is.
