The twin towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena are currently playing the inter-office and Christmas Cup - but last night one of the players died on the field. 56-year-old Luis "Sweets" Martinez, from Esperanza Village, collapsed while playing football at Falcon Field in San Ignacio.
Martinez - who is a former footballer - opened the match by scoring the first goal for his team. But, the Mayor told us that during the halftime break he collapsed on the bench with a n apparent heart attack. Emergency medical technicians from the Santa Elena Fire Department responded and rushed him to the San Ignacio Community Hospital, but despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
After the news of his death came back to the stadium, his team decided to play on. They won the match and dedicated it to Martinez.
