New Water Treatment For Northern Ambergris
posted (October 29, 2024)
The Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre signed an MOU in Belmopan today with government for the implementation of The North Ambergris Caye Water and Waste Water Project.

The 2 Million dollar project is aimed towards providing sustainable water and waste solutions, managing low carbon, climate resilient non potable and potable water resources for the communities within North Ambergris Caye. Here are the highlights of today's signing.

Andre Perez, Area Representative, Belize Rural South
"This water and Sewer system that is going to be done up north also not only engages for Tourism and resources but also the livelihoods of the people of Ambergris Caye who wake in the plans of lands and housing so this is an important as it relates to infrastructure here so I just wanted to highlight that before I start."

"The transitioning of Belize waste water and water sectors to a low carbon and climate resilient status is not only just vital it is also within our reach. The project titled building climate resilience into the water and wastewater system of Ambergris Caye or the AC Cruise project embraces a pioneering integrated water and waste water management approach. This initiative will significantly enhance municipal water supply and waste water systems resulting in greater access to potable water improved and treated water storage and efficient wastewater reuse."

Dr Colin Young, Executive Director, Caribbean Community Climate Change Center
"When we look at what's going to happen in the future from a climate perspective we know that San Pedro and Ambergris Caye is going to get more drier overtime. We understand that over the many years they aquifer that would have been in San Pedro because of Overuse and droughts would have been exhausted and so San Pedro when you look at the growth rate of both the population, not the population who lives year round in San Pedro plus the fact that it is one of the largest destinations for tourism in the country the water needs of San Pedro is only going to increase over time but what is happening right now is that water when it is flushed down the toilet and it's used and it goes into the sewer system in never comes back in for any types of reuse and so we are wasting a very valuable resource and so this particular project as you will hear in more detail form Dr Cane in a bit is that it is going to upgrade the sewage treatment plant from a secondary level to a tertiary level which has very clean water greater than WHO standard that can be reused for non potable uses."
