In February 2020, 31-year-old American National Arianna Jones was brutally killed in her San Ignacio apartment, allegedly by her ex-boyfriend. Over four years later, he's still not been convicted, and Jones' mother is afraid he'll be able to walk on a technicality. She says that the accused, Javan Moody, poses a threat to women if he is released onto the streets. The case is before the high court, after the defence made a no case submission.
And now her mother is concerned that it could be thrown out. We spoke to her today via Zoom.
Janis Miltenberger, Mother of Deceased "He's not gonna be coming into my country. He's going to be there in Belize and it's the women and people visiting Belize that are going to be at risk. And I love Belize, I don't want that to happen. I don't really have much experience with the law or judicial system in Belize but I believe that it's a struggling system there."
"It's a poor country, they don't have the resources. I saw that DNA evidence had to be bundled into large packets to be sent off because it was more economical. I see and I've seen other things happen in Belize and it happens here in the US where rape kits go unchecked."
"Yeah, I'm concerned that there's not enough focus on the judicial system and on getting people off the street. I think that, I mean, I'm not out for any kind of revenge. Really what I'm after is when somebody does the crime that they should be held accountable."
The trial resumes on November 11th.
Miltenberger is also giving interviews to News outlets in her home city of Seattle.
