And that plan will also look at how to mitigate the use of single use plastics. Mayor Wagner explained that even with the legislation put in place by the Department of Environment, plastic pollution is still a major problem in the city. He added that it's up to the DOE to enforce stricter adherence to the laws.
Bernard Wagner, Mayor of Belize City
"I think the DOE and have put in place, I think they had actually put in place legislation to address single use plastics. And they had given the country some window to migrate to the new sort of styrofoam type, that would be entertained."
"But we still have the problem with plastics. You know, plastics create a lot of environmental hazards, creates fires, many of the fires that we start, we saw in the past, this past summer, was due to many of those plastics overheating."
"Again, that will have to be a long -term look based on the Department of the Environment. How stringent they will be in really policing the legislation that was passed."
