But if the Mexican authorities are pressured into closing the border to Belizean cattle, what then?
Mai says they would have to go to OIRSA, which is the International Regional Organization for Plant and Animal Health:
Jose Mai, Minister of Agriculture
"Belize is a member of OIRSA, Mexico is a member of OIRSA and within the OIRSA organization, we tend to abide by the rules of trade and plant and animal health And so, you cannot, OIRSA would have to step in and say listen your not abiding by the rules of engagement so to speak, on this matter."
In his letter to the Mexicans Mai stressed that Belize is in daily communication with SENASICA in Mexico to coordinate and take necessary actions to prevent this pest.
