Man Jailed For Defending Sister From Boyfriend
posted (November 7, 2024)

On Monday we told you about 24 year old Kenroy Lanza who was stabbed on Sunday night in the old Hattieville area. Lanza had reportedly gotten into a fight with his brother-in-law, who allegedly inflicted the injuries. However, his common law wife reported that her brother, 23 year old Brett Mejia, was only trying to protect her from her husband.

In court today, Mejia was charged with two counts of attempted murder and deadly means of harm. No plea was taken from him and he was remanded to prison until January 6th, 2025.

However, Mejia's sister told our court reporter they tried making a report against Lanza, but it was unsuccessful. She asked to appear off camera:

Voice of: Sister of Accused
"My boyfriend was drinking and he wanted to try to rape me and he grabbed me in my shirt and I end up releasing his hand. I ran over to my mom, when I ran over to my mom, he ran behind me with a knife and a machete to try and chop my mom. I was trying to help my mom get the machete and I couldn't get it so I ran to get my brother. My brother reached and when my brother came, he was trying to get the knife and the machete. The knife ended up turning right around back and stabbed my boyfriend."

Reporter:
"You said that you all went to make a report and the police said you were talking fool?"

Voice of: Sister of Accused
"That I am saying stupidness, nothing I'm saying is making sense."

"My brother was charged but it's not done because what happened I don't know get him back because that's past craziness. Just let him keep his way and the best thing I can do is to get a restraining order and what he wants to give his son, he could give his son through the police. I will try to fight it the best way I could because I won't leave anybody to kill my mom and me and that just goes like that. And now my brother went to jail and we're Belizean, we have no justice to what is happening. Just because my boyfriend got injured, that means my brother should take the rap? No, because it's unfair. That's self-defense."

Reporter:
"So you're going to go and try to give a report again?"

Voice of: Sister of Accused
"Yes ma'am."

Reporter:
"Have you guys sought any legal advice? Help from an attorney?"

Voice of: Sister of Accused
"No ma'am."

Reporter:
"You plan to get help through an attorney?"

Voice of: Sister of Accused
"Yes ma'am. We'll try."

Lanza is still hospitalized.
