The victim had just moved back to his home town in Independence village where it happened. Jomarie Lanza spoke to his family:

Just after 9:00 last night in the village of independence, 28 year old Selvin Humes was stabbed to death near the Southern Corner restaurant adjacent to the Cemetery. He died shortly after from his wounds.

The man who killed him says Humes because he threw a beer at him and he felt he had to kill him.

Humes is originally from the Ghost Town area of Belize City and his family members say that he kept to himself for the most part.

"Well regarding the whole incident we don't want to speculate because we don't have the full facts we just have hearsay and stuff that we hear so we don't want to speculate on that we just got a call last night that he had some altercation he got stabbed and he died that's it."

"Selvin was a, he took his drinks now and then he was a person who kept to himself he fixes phones and tablets any problem you have you can come to him and he will help you and that's it."

Humes had been planning to visit his mom here in the city just a day before the incident.

"Originally this is where Selvin lived from he was small that's where he was born and grew up but he has family on that side. So a couple months ago he decided to relocate there and spend some time with his family. He was just communicating with his mom telling her that he wanted to come home Monday so he was planning to come home Monday."

Reality has not quite set in for this family as yet. Humes's cousin says that they are still trying to process the fact that they will never see him again.

"Up to this point the whole family is still in a state of disbelief no one hasn't really shed any tears because we are still trying to process the whole incident. We still can't believe it yet so until we see a body then we will finally digest the whole situation but it is still hard to believe because not Selvin, we never would have believed this about Selvin, not him."

The main suspect has been detained, and the DPP's office will direct if his claim of self-defense makes it a justifiable homicide.
