Police Working Overtime To Mitigate Accidents And Crime During Christmas
posted (December 2, 2024)
And as we head into the Christmas season, the police will be out in full force to keep you safe while you shop. The ComPol explained that they will be working with the transport department to try to mitigate car and motorcycle accidents, and they will be employing their Christmas anti-crime campaign during this month. Here's how he explained it.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"The police will continue to do what we can to avert these fatal traffic accidents, involving motorcycles in particular. It is a very challenging one because as much as we try to educate riders of these motorcycles, we are still seeing on the part of some of them who are very reckless in how they maneuver these motorcycles in the city and on the high schools so the police continue to work along with the department of transport and in the cities and towns with the local traffic department to see what we can do to avert these things from happening. In terms of crime, again for the Christmas period we do what we have to do which is the annual Christmas anti-crime campaign. This is when we see police officers, having worked their shift for the day, they comes out in the evening time and do extra patrol between 6 and 10pm in the business areas as well as the hotspots. This is done with a.view to ensure that those persons who wish to go out and do their Christmas shopping can do so in a crime free environment feeling safe with the presence of the police as well as for merchants to be able to conduct business in a safe environment. Again looking at the hotspots, we maintain presence in those areas as well because we don't want people to be leaving those areas and go into the commercial zones and commit crimes and then go back into these areas. At the same time we also do it to guard against shootings and other violence crimes that may occur in those particular areas. I encourage commanders to look at the local comp state trend to see the ares where they crime is being committed, who is committing the crimes, the times which the crimes are being committed and use that a platform for how they deploy the police officers who come out and work extra patrols so that is working so I am hoping for the rest of this year, we're going to continue to do that with a view to make sure we keep our numbers down."

But what about those murders that happen at home, especially during a time when people will be drinking alcohol? He said those murders are the hardest to prevent.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"The truth is, the last four murders have been tough. I'm like Jules, I tend to fire bad words at times because it's difficult, we're trying out best to hold down the conventional type of murders, the gang related murders and so forth, those that emanate from night clubs with drunkenness and so forth. And then we see these ones pop up, the domestic ones that are not within the preventative reach of the police and those frustrate me because we're out there, we're trying them out of the blue one just comes up. It's tough but we have to continue to do what we need to do to hold those perpetrators accountable. I know that we're in the 16 days of activism right now and there's a lot being said in terms of domestic violence and gender based violence and we're hoping with what is going to be shared around this time that it is going to help to reduce these types of crimes. Within our department, we have commissioned our local psychiatrist to go around the country and to speak with our police officers because we also saw an increase in domestic issues involving police, where a number of officers were arrested and so again, to stem that, Mr Leslie is going around and talking with the police officers across the country, giving them insights in terms of what they can expect or what they can do to avert issues of domestic violence."
