Government Goes For the Big Guns to Fend Off Voters' List Challenge
posted (December 11, 2024)
Turning now to political news, the Belize Peace Movement continues to fight for the voters list to conform to the constitutional requirement of near proportionality.

Their last case had some judicial success but zero effect on the very un-equally distributed numbers of voters in each constituency. Well, they're still trying, and - with attorney Sharon Pitts - they've filed a matter in the high court.

The names on the application are the usual suspects in the voter reform movement, Roody Wade, Hubert Enriquez, Paul Morgan, Will Maheia, Bobby Lopez, and others.

But government - no doubt aware of how far away the voters list status quo is from the constitutional ideal of proportionality - has retained two of the the most high flying and highly priced legal eagles to defend their side and, likely, make sure that the ship of state can cruise into the next elections with the list just as it is.

Eamon Courtenay from Courtenay Coye LLP has been retained to defend the AG's Ministry and Godfrey Smith of Marine Parade Law Chambers has been retained to defend the Elections and Boundaries Commission.

The matter is still at the case management level - but the applicants had hoped that if their case is strong enough they could force the government to hold off on general elections until the constituencies are reapportioned.

Good luck with that, but we'll keep you posted.
