The average sized Christmas Turkey can be anywhere from 8 to 12 pounds. For Quality Poultry they sold up to 16 pound turkeys last year, and today we stopped by their store and caught up with them as their team restocked their turkey freezers. Here's what we learned about this year's sales Jomarie Lanza reports.
Tis the season for Turkey, and Quality Poultry isn't running out any time soon. We found them stacking up their turkey freezer this afternoon at their Belize City Branch on North Front street. Their manager says that their prices are still affordable no matter what size turkey you're looking for.
Andre Selgado, Manager, Quality Poultry
"Our Turkey priced at extremely competitive especially this year so everything you know went up in Belize that also included Turkeys however the increase for turkeys was very very minimal so you as the consumer you come to purchase a turkey if you spent $50 last year it would probably only be like $52 so there was not a big increase in terms of the price of turkeys."
"Right now it's early December and it's been amazing because compared to last year we have already seen an increase in the turkey sales so we are up a very significant amount so far and you know Belizeans are very size specific and actually I spoke to a customer yesterday and she said nobody can pick her turkey except her even in terms of sizing we have everything available in country right now."
And aside from affordability, Selgado says that everything is locally sourced. He says their turkeys are fed and raised right in Spanish lookout, and encourages Belizeans to continue to support locally grown.
Andre Selgado, Manager, Quality Poultry
"We do not sell imported turkey's we do know we got report that there is a store currently selling imported turkeys which at that we are disappointed in the government because at the end of the day the country has been self sustainable for Turkeys over 30 years with the exception of 2015 with the bird flu which was the only year that unanimously as a country and the poultry association which we were a member of we decided to import turkeys into country but besides that the country had been self sufficient for turkeys over 30 years for us seeing that there is someone selling imported turkeys it did make quality poultry specific, extremely disappointed with that situation as is."
But if you're still on the hunt for the perfect bird that will feed your family this holiday, with this weekend's 12.5% GST Drop, Selgado says that they have tested out the system and you will definitely be seeing some savings once you shop at Quality Poultry.
Andre Selgado, Manager, Quality Poultry
"So 12.5% is a significant amount and if you do look at it by calculations in terms of how much you purchase it does add up at the end of the day so our system is already set and our IT department has been running test after test trying to figure out how exactly they will do it because again it came out Monday but there were also some regulations to it so nobody on higher purchase can get the 12.5% discount, anybody, credit customers so our IT guys are in the background making sure everything is up and running for that but I can tell you that at Quality Poultry our products are already priced at a very low price so you already get a low price in any of the groceries items that you purchase in anyone of our supermarkets country wide."
For clarity, regarding the GST waiver, he was talking about the other grocery items they sell in the store, not turkey which because it is classed as fresh meat does not pay GST.
