This morning on Sun Up the Compol also raised another issue of concern as it relates to road traffic laws. He says that for although the police have a duty to enforce the laws citizens must also learn to follow them as well, he says that one of the things they have made note of is the amount of people who ride around on motorcycles with more than one passenger on board, especially without a helmet and most of the time it involves children.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"If you go out on the streets between 7:30 and 8 you will see a number of persons taking children to school on motorcycles or on bicycles. They have their child on the frame of the bicycle and in the case of motorcycles you'll see the child behind in some cases, three. Two at the back and one in the front and then the rider has on a half helmet and the children have on nothing in some cases you'll see the mother and the father and the child in between. These are against the law but I bet you if police or transport were to stop these people and tell them to get off or give them a ticket the first thing people or Belizeans will say is why you are harassing people they are taking their children to school. Right but they don't understand what the consequences could be if something were to go wrong you are putting an innocent child at risk it's not that the child wants to be there you are the parent you are the one who must make sure that you make right decisions to be able to secure the well being of your child and this is the thing where we have difficulty with we tend to want to blame law enforcement for enforcing the law and not those who are breaking the law."
