posted (December 17, 2024)
A Guatemalan man living in Hope Creek Village lost his life today after he was knocked down on the highway. Not many details are known except that the man, only known as Jose, was walking his dog, which was also hit. Courtney Menzies visited the village and spoke to a resident who was on the scene shortly after the accident. Here's her story.

An elderly resident of Hope Creek was walking his dog across the road when they were both knocked down by a delivery truck around 10:00 this morning.

The man, only identified so far as Jose, usually walked on the road to visit some friends nearby, but one neighbor who heard when the accident happened said he had issues with his sight.

Jerson Perez, Neighbor/Witness
"I didn't see anything, I just heard it and from there I came out of my house and saw the man on the ground already."

Courtney Menzies:
"Did you know him?"

Jerson Perez, Neighbor/Witness
"Not really well, I just in from work so I wasn't here for a long time. But I kinda know him, he lives somewhere back here by us. I don't really know where he's from, I only know his first name Jose, other than that I don't know him very well."

Courtney Menzies:
"Did he recently move here?"

Jerson Perez, Neighbor/Witness
"No I think he was here a long time ago."

Courtney Menzies:
"And he was walking his dog?"

Jerson Perez, Neighbor/Witness
"Yes, I think he was going to work or something, I don't really know."

"Maybe he was trying to cross the road or something but my father said he did have an eye problem, maybe that was something that did happen with him too."

Jose is reportedly originally from Guatemala and has no family in Belize. He lived in the same area where he was knocked down.

The driver was taken into police custody.
