And while Glaucia is trying to get to Belize, former Miss Universe Belize, Iris Salguerro is trying to stay in the US, and together with her daughter. Over the weekend, Salguerro posted a video on her social media accounts explaining that she's been in an abusive situation with her partner, who is an American, and is at risk of losing her home and custody of her daughter, who was born in the US. She set up a GoFundMe to try and raise money for legal fees and housing so she could fight her case in court. She also reached out to the embassy in the US for assistance.
But while many have tried to contact ministers to get her help, PM Briceno said that there's not much they can do since the alleged crime occurred in the US.
John Briceno, Prime Minister
"That's a tough one, she's in the United States, she's in a foreign country, and it entails a citizen of that country. More than our Embassy reaching out to her, we'll just help her with legal advice, we can't go to the government and say hey your citizen is- they will tell us well you have to go through the legal system, just like here when a US citizen would break the law and we would arrest or take whatever legal action, their embassy is not as if the president is going to be calling us, it's the embassy will try to assist their citizens to make sure they get the proper advice."
