Our next story involves injury to a wild animal - we have blurred it - but if you're sensitive - you might want to look away for 30 seconds.
On Tuesday night, this tapir was accidentally hit by a vehicle in Teakettle. The driver explained that the tapir was trying to cross the road, but turned around abruptly, and he wasn't able to stop in time.
Representatives from the Belize Zoo were on their way to Cayo at the time and were some of the first responders. They said that it was likely that the tapir was trying to climb a steep hill but misjudged it and turned around instead.
The tapir died on the site and the Zoo took it to be buried. This is the 6th tapir fatality for 2024.
And while tapirs are often victims of speedy drivers, the caution signs and education from The Tapir Project help to alert these drivers that they should be on the lookout. Just recently on the John Smith Road, this footage was taken of vehicles stopping and allowing a tapir to take his time and cross the road safely.
