He's one of the most well known car salesmen in Belize, and his Prestige auto is a top used car dealership - but today Amado Badillo hit a low when he was taken to court in the back of a police pickup - that's after a night in police lockdown.
Today, Badillo, seen here - covering his face with the blue shirt - was charged with Obtaining property by deception after getting paid 14 grand for a vehicle and not delivering.
Appearing unrepresented before the Chief Magistrate he pleaded not guilty. There was no objection to bail the Chief Magistrate granted him bail in the sum of $10,000. Conditions to his bail include that he must stay away from the virtual complainant; but Badillo told the court that he will have to make one contact with her since she has a vehicle that belonged to him. The Prosecutor then informed Badillo that he will have to have a third party do that or he will be in violation of his bail.
So how did it come to this? Well, 35 year old Teresa Flores, a receptionist at a law firm, reported that her ordeal began more than a year ago in November, 2023. She said Badillo claimed to have a 2018 Ford Focus for sale for $14,000 dollars.
Flores transferred the money to Badillo and received a receipt indicating the vehicle had been fully paid for. Badillo assured Flores that the vehicle would arrive within two to three weeks. However, weeks turned into months, and the car never arrived. Flores attempted to follow up with Badillo on multiple occasions right up to October of this year. Despite her efforts, neither the vehicle nor a refund was provided.
Frustrated and unable to resolve the matter, Flores reported the incident to the police five days ago, more than a year after the initial transaction.
For his part Badillo today posted that he got a special deal on the car for Flores who he called a friend, saying quote, "I bought the car, and then started experiencing financial difficulties shortly after. So as not to inconvenience her, I offered her a vehicle whenever she needed one, and some months ago, gave her one to use full time, until her vehicle came."
We should note we have seen a number of criminal complaints for the same type of complaint against Badillo - although this is the first one to result in charges being brought. Also, we have seen at least four civil judgements against him for the same types of complaints. In those cases, judgement was entered against Badillo in the many tens of thousands of dollars.
