The rarely used charge of "cruelty to an animal" has been levied, and it's against a cop. Video footage from Trial Farm, Orange Walk shows the moment when 34 year old police constable Mauricio Wright hit a dog repeatedly with a machete in Orange Walk.
The video was passed on to the cops and yesterday Wright was charged.
The president of the Orange Walk Humane Society, Marisa Reyes, explained that it's a major precedent to set and hopefully a warning for anyone who may think of abusing an animal.
Marisa Reyes, President of the Orange Walk Humane Society
"It highlights how rampant animal cruelty is in our country where we have no space for. So we were able to get assistance and we got word that the person has officially been charged and it is a historic event for all of the animal advocacy groups because we have been working towards this, we have been working towards actually getting attention, to getting the people charge, for people to think twice about hurting an animal, especially to that extent. So we call on Belize today to continue taking the videos, continue reporting, this is the only way we can cause more changes in our country, and we are glad that we finally have a case to report and say animal cruelty has no space in Belize."
"We call to the public, get empathy, animals are a living creature just like us and if we have empathy it will make us a better society, a better community on a whole."
"We hope that everyone that can donate to their group, that can volunteer, that can sponsor spaying and be responsible pet owners, that's all we can ask."
