With Lee Mark Challenging Shyne, PUP May Have A Chance In Mesop First Time In 50 Years
posted (January 22, 2025)
And whenever that day falls sometime - let's say - between March and June, the UDP will be facing what could be an electoral apocalypse. The party is more deeply divided than ever - and that was confirmed yesterday when Lee Mark Chang officially launched his UDP candidacy against UDP Leader Shyne Barrow.

For many observers, it confirms a path to mutually assured political destruction and gives the PUP a chance in a stronghold such as Mesopotamia - which they have not won since 1974.

Today the PM said that his candidate may have a fighting chance:

John Briceno, Prime Minister
"Whenever you have your opponent's support is being divided, it certainly is an opportunity but you're right, the Mesopotamia division has been voting red since 94 when they defeated Lindy Rogers and well it's on us now to be able to take advantage of it but it's still difficult, we have a very good candidate you know and so I'm very hopeful that he will be able to do well, I mean Larry was born in that area, he grew up in that area so he's well known in that area, really nice guy, and so maybe we will have to advantage of this opportunity that has been offered to us."

Courtney Menzies:
"Do you view Lee Mark as a formidable candidate?"

John Briceno, Prime Minister
"Of course, Lee Mark is well known, he also lived in that area for a long time, his family, the first or the original Chon Saan was in that area, I think it's Euphrates and so I think he is pretty well known in that area and supposedly he has access to enough funding and so yes we see him as a formidable candidate."

Courtney Menzies:
"Elections are a few months away and the UDP still have mended or gotten back together, who do you think should get the color red in this case?"

John Briceno, Prime Minister
"Thankfully that's not for me to decide. That's something that the elections and boundaries commissioner will decide, well the Chief Elections Officer so I will leave that to the experts and the officials, they will decide who will get the red."
