Goodbye Betty, hello George and Phillip… Belize's new currency notes will be unveiled tomorrow and it's no secret that the Queen will no longer be featured on it.
Since her passing, those countries that used her image have been faced with two options: replace her with King Charles III or some other imagery.
Belize chose the latter route and today the PM confirmed that the notes with George Price and Phillip Goldson are quite a sight to behold. He also stressed that the currency peg remains secure though the monarchy will no longer be featured:
John Briceno, Prime Minister
"We've seen them before and so I know what to expect, it's a really beautiful note and we'll be using our two national heroes, George Price and Phillip Goldson, we have them in different denominations. It's more modern and with more features to prevent counterfeit in it and so I think it's going to be something that Belizeans are going to accept and to see it now, it's going to be our people on the note and I know some people were saying, well, it does not have the queen. Well, one the queen is dead. And that has nothing to do with whether the Belize dollar has it's strength, it's based on our economy, based on the amount of US reserves that we have, it's not the pound but it's the US dollars."
The Central Bank's Design Reveal for the new currency notes will be held tomorrow at 4:00 at the Belize Civic Centre - and it will be streamed live on Channel 7 and our social pages.
