Untitled Document But despite these challenges McLachlan says that in terms of competitiveness within the region, Belize's sugar cane production is doing better than other CARICOM countries:

Mac McLachlan, VP, International Relations, ASR BSI
"Some of the the other mills in the region are not doing so well and their production is going down they are still producing sugar but maybe their production is falling off and we are finding a natural home for our sugar both in CARICOM and in Europe and we will always go to where the best market opportunity lies. So it really is a very important market for us and it will continue to grow. I think as we continue to grow up the value added chain and look at really helping with the regions food security and helping reduce external imports of products, food products into the region as so many advantages to the sugar industry in the region so we are very much a leading player in that and a supporter of all the industries that are trying to improve."
