But despite being able to make large shipments out of Belize and into the Caribbean and UK, McLachlan says that they were disappointed to learn that GOB would not give them the green light to sell their packaged sugar in Belize, despite it being a big hit in other countries.
Mac McLachlan, VP, International Relations, ASR BSI
"We are very disappointed we have invested 2 Million Belize dollars in a retail packaging line and we have four thousand tons of retail packaged sugar in our warehouse that's in one kilo 2 kilo, 5 kilo and 10 kilo bags and these are beautiful bags with zip lockers on them they are branded under the domino name which is our brand name and I just think it's just a real shame that the Belizean citizens can't have access to that sugar because their control price of sugar which is below the raw sugar price global price, even though it is proper Demerara sugar its gone through a whole food process making it has been packaged beautifully, unfortunately that price does not support the cost of producing the sugar so we are selling it to Trinidad, we are selling it to Jamaica we are selling it to St Kitts, and everyone is appreciating that excellent quality sugar and that excellent quality retail packaging, and unfortunately the good people of Belize are unable to access that which I feel is very unfortunate."
