The US State Department has frozen nearly all foreign assistance worldwide, days after President Donald Trump issued a sweeping executive order Monday to put a hold on such aid for 90 days.
And it's already having an effect in Belize. CARSI funding, which is the Central American Regional Security Initiative has been put on hold. In the past CARSI has funded dozens of initiatives focused on good governance, citizen security, and human rights in Belize.
But, last week the NGO's who currently have grants received a notice saying, quote,
"Effective immediately, we request that your organization cease all work. This action is necessary due to an ongoing review of all U.S. foreign assistance programs to ensure alignment with the President's policy priorities. No further funding will be obligated for CARSI-ESF grants until they have been reviewed and approved."
And so while all this initiatives are in a very perilous holding pattern - the IOM International Organization for Migration is also in a perilous position since the US is the top donor to that organization. The Western Hemisphere Regional Migration Program helps governments manage migration as the IOM has during Belize's amnesty program.
And while that's happening in Belize - in the US - the immigration crackdown is causing panic in immigrant communities - and as this news clip from news nation shows what's happening in Chicago:
