Rubio Came To Central America But Skipped Belize, FM Not Concerned
posted (February 5, 2025)
Yesterday we told you of the US Secretary of State's Central American tour. He visited Panama, El Salvador, Costa Rica and today he was in Guatemala. But he's not coming to Belize. We asked the Foreign Minister about the trip.

Francis Fonseca, Minister of Education
"Yeah, well, no Secretary of State has come to Belize ever. I don't think it's, you know, it. It's not gone to any Caricom state, Belize is a part of Caricom. I think it's good. I think it's good. I think Mr. Rubio's trip to the region is good. It's important, as he has said, to really start in your own backyard. The, you know, US administrations have generally given very little, you know, attention to their own backyard, to Central America and the Caribbean, except for talking about, you know, when they talk about illegal migration and drug trafficking, these issues, so we're glad that for his first trip, Mr. Rubio, Secretary Rubio, chose, a different path. You know, normally we would start in Europe and that sort of thing. He said, let's start in your own backyard. So we see that as a good sign that perhaps the administration will have greater interest in what's happening here in Central America and what's happening in the Caribbean. You know, so, we view it in a positive light. But again, the countries that he visited, of course, were countries where you had the specific issues that he wanted to address with those countries, on behalf of his administration. So, you know, but we have for some, you know, we continue to have a very good working relationship with the US government, the US State Department. I just met on Monday with the new chargé d' affairs, to discuss our working relationship. So we feel very good about our partnership and relationship with the United States."
