At the end of January we told you that Belize has filed a declaration that it will join South Africa's genocide case against Israel at the ICJ. Yesterday the media asked Foreign Minister Fonseca whether the government expects to see repercussions from the US, which has aided and funded Israel.
Francis Fonseca, Minister of Education
"Belize has always, in terms of our foreign policy, adopted a very principled position and I think that has been respected by countries across the world, including the United States of America so I don't expect that there will be any negative impact from our decisions. as a country that's faced with a claim, we have always made sure that we have our voices heard on issues of self-determination. That's critical in terms of our own legal position so I think certainly the United States and other countries understand that, they appreciate that, they respect that. We're not anti-Israel, we're not anti-anybody but we are pro self-determination."
