The PSU has been clamoring for answers from the Social Security Board on the sudden departure of the former new CEO Dr Leroy Almendarez. As we have reported, Dr Almendarez was let go after only 5 months and the deputy has been acting in his capacity since. Today the president demanded that the chairperson of the board address the public with much-needed answers surrounding his termination, and whether the Belizean public will have to fund his payout.
Dean Flowers, President, PSU
"We need to pay attention to that, because we do not contribute our pension, or sorry, our salary, a portion of our salary that would guarantee us pension and as well as coverage for certain benefits, so that the board can utilize that money to settle payouts for their poor administrative choices."
"The chair, the media must camp out at Social Security and demand answers from the chair and the board. What, how much is it costing the contributors of this country to fire Dr. Leroy Almendarez after five months?"
"Normally, social security issues 3 year contracts. We need to know if the chair Miss Nayeli Sosa, I believe her name is, along with the board took a decision that will ultimately cost contributors of this country three years of salary. We also need to know what were the basis for the dismissal."
"What was the basis? Is the allegations that the deputy who is not provided it for in law was earning more than the CEO? That is a rumor that is out there. Is it that the CEO was not aware of the contents of the contract of the deputy?"
"We need answers and if Ms. Sosa and the board cannot provide us with those answers, then they need to be removed. They need to be removed or they need to do the honorable thing and step down, because you failed contributors."
"The fact that you clearly were divided in the selection of a CEO showed that you cannot bring consensus to a board because based on, again, the beef, which is a very reliable, I must say, media house."
"It looked like the water was muddy from the get go. They placed two bull in a pen, knowing fully well that it couldn't hold. And so I think I want to challenge the media. If you all have to go to her house, if you have to go to her place of business, she needs to face this country and if she can't face this country, then Miss Sosa, the choice for chairman of SSB was a poor choice by the prime minister, if she cannot face this country and give us explanation on what occurred."
Almendarez had a 3 year contract and reports tell us it was valued in the vicinity of half a million dollars.
