Mai also discussed the decimating effect that the fusarium fungus is having on the sugar industry. He said sugar yields will be way down:

"Our technical team is saying that we may have a 30 % decrease in sugarcane production this year. We'll have a sugar yield reduction. And so this project seeks to look at an integrated systems approach. It's considering resistant or alternative varieties, varieties that are resistant to drought, some resistant to excess moisture and some resistant to fusarium. This is a whole different package. There's not a silver bullet that will cure fusarium. It has to be an integrated approach. It has to be integrated cropping systems. It has to be a change of technology."
