And while that was a hearing to try and stop the election - one UDP candidate is trying to stop what he says is electoral fraud with the Cayo North voters' list.
That's the fourth largest constituency in the country and the UDP Standard Bearer Omar Figueroa alleges a major electoral fraud.
As we have reported, in December of 2024, Figueroa had written to the Chief Elections officer asking her to launch an investigation into 124 names found on the voters registration list of persons who do not reside in Cayo North.
Now, Figueroa also claims that the 124 persons he managed to get disqualified have still not been removed. He is now appealing to the public in hopes that someone will be held accountable.
Omar Figueroa, UDP Standard Bearer, Cayo North
"It was back in July, August of 2024 when our team here in Cayo North first began to fight against what we were looking at as a case of organized, electoral fraud involving the local office here in the constituency of Cayo North. At that time, it was our opinion that perhaps it only involved one or two rogue elements within the department. As time progressed, we started to get concerned because it became obvious that elements within the department higher than just one or two rogue elements were clearly complicit in the process. As we continued fighting, there were two important very significant court rulings, local magistrates here in San Ignacio. At first during the transfer period the magistrate made a clear and unambiguous ruling regarding 101 persons that were attempting to transfer into Cayo North. The ruling was specific; it said that these 100 and one must go back to the constituency in which they came from. This was based on evidence that we provided in court, evidence that clearly showed that these persons did not live where they were claiming to live for the annual review. There was another ruling in court involving 23 persons that never lived at the address where they were claiming to live And again the magistrate ruled that Leah is 23 persons must be removed from the Cayo North voters list. A few days ago we were able to obtain an official copy of the Cayo North voters list and it is a clear and direct violation of the magistrates order. I think this is a cause of concern for all Belizeans. Something like this really violates our constitution and undermines our democracy, and it really raises some serious questions about the integrity of the entire elections and boundaries department. Someone needs to be held to account."
We'll keep following the story.
