Artisan Market Opponents Lost

And the rural south rep was also asked about the new artisan market in the Embarcadero area. We told you that the residents had filed an injunction which was later dropped and the market will continue, despite complaints from both the artisans and the fishers. Perez said that the space wasn't being utilized to its full capacity.

Andre Perez, Minister of The Blue Economy & Disaster Risk Management
"That was something that was really looked at holistically that can enhance the tourism product, what is San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. That area is an area that is not looking too attractive yet you have a beautiful sunset and there's a restaurant there that when you sit there and you go have a dinner in the evening, the sunset is incredible and that space there was being wasted, how can we do it better. Right now, the artisan market, much to be desired, it looks like stables, that was something that was done many years ago, but we're not sitting down to say blame other people. How can we enhance it, how can we do it better? But of course as usual, with changes, our people sometimes tend to say we don't want to accept change for the better. As it relates to the injunction, that is - I don't call it mischief because everyone has a right, if you feel your rights are being violated you seek legal redress in the courts. But the people who were there, some of them who live in front there, but one of them has their house somewhere that actually did land reclamation right in front of them, destroyed mangroves, and this is the very same person leading to make this thing happen. So it was like a personal thing, I don't want to call it political but that injunction has been lifted, the work continues and we're engaging with our artisans, they have the first opportunity. They will sign a contract, they have to, there are certain rules and regulations managed by the municipality so there are conditions because where it is right now is not looking good for attracting tourists so they will have the first option. It is a good thing because we have to make the plans now that are coming up ahead is to change the Saca Chispas place into a multipurpose complex for events. So that is just part of a bigger plan coming for San Pedro."
