Gang Leaders' Brother Grazed In Head, Police Move To Contain Retaliation
posted (February 17, 2025)
On Saturday evening in Belize City, there were fears that an all out gang war might break out. That's after the young brother of the leader of one of the city's most prominent gangs was almost killed.

But, fortunately, Akeem Smith was only grazed.

Assistant Commissioner Hilberto Romero says the men came under fire when they were in the Haulover Creek passing behind the Musa and Balderamos building:

Hilberto Romero, OCED
"On Saturday , 15th February 2025. Police responded to a shooting incident at North Front Street in Belize City. Upon their arrival, they learned that one person had been shot and taken to the KHMH for treatment. Checks were made at the KHMH, where police found Akeem Smith with gunshot injuries. Information is that Smith was, along with three other male persons in a boat, in the river, when two male persons who were on the concrete deck fired several shots towards the direction, causing the injuries to Smith. Smith was treated and has since been released from the KHMH. We had several persons in custody in regards to this shooting for questioning."

"There is an ongoing operation at this time, to try and prevent any retaliation. Several patrols are in the areas."

Reporter
"Can you say what's the motive?"

Hilberto Romero, OCED
"This is a result of gang rivalry in the city."

The shooters are said to have come out of nearby Pinks Alley.
