Another leaked document suggests that the report of the Senate Special Select Committee investigating the Portico Agreement may never see the light of day - through official channels at least.
The report is complete, but at the last Senate meeting of this term of government one week ago -the President refused to table it.
Reports tell us that before Monday's meeting started, the independent senators tried mightily to convince the president after she refused them in writing. In that letter she said she is, quote, "compelled, by my constitutional duty to protect both the integrity of the Senate and taxpayers' money. This requires conducting due diligence prior to acceding to your request, such that I am satisfied, as far as is practical and can reasonably be ascertained, that the Report contains nothing that opens the. Government of Belize to a lawsuit." End quote.
In a signed letter by the 5 independent senators, they say, quote, "We believe that, in accordance with the Standing Orders of the Senate and our Terms of Reference, the SSSC has fulfilled its mandate in submitting our Report." End quote.
But now that this term of the senate is complete - there's no telling what will happen to the report when another state is convened - but we would guess that the report will be buried.
