While Gabriel's loss has truly been an eye opener for the Ministry of Education, it also made obvious the need for urgent changes and reform at Stella Maris in terms of security and safety.
And that of course must first begin with the administration.
Another media house had previously aired a recording of a conversation between the principal and a parent whose child had also slipped out of school compound. During the recorded conversation the principal had made several inappropriate remarks that outraged parents and the public and brought Ito question whether she is qualified to work with special needs children. According to the Minister of Education the principal is qualified, however she is expected to retire soon.
Francis Fonseca, Minister of Culture
"Yeah I didn't hear these comments. I have to say, I didn't hear the comments. But, you know, Principal Cantun, you know, has a long history in, in special education she came from Orange Walk where she was serving, you know, at a special education institution. And, you know, so she came highly recommended. But of course, we're reviewing everything. In fact, the truth is that she will retire very shortly. I think she retires at the end of April, actually. So in a sense, it's, it's a moot question because we will have to find you leadership for Stella Maris."
"We have, you know, the team at the Ministry of Education, the CEO and the chief education officer are preparing for that. And looking into that, so, you know, that's something we'll deal with, I think, you know, we're obsolete in March. We'll be in a position to, to name a successor, because I think she goes on holiday a few, a few weeks early."
