And while one man walked free from a murder charge, another was sentenced to life imprisonment. He is 24 year old Darwin Romero.
In April of 2022 Romero targeted 39 year old Mark Lord Jr while he was walking on Jones Avenue in Belize City. It was a broad daylight murder. The men had argued earlier that day and Romero shot him 6 times to the body.
In December of 2024, Romero pleaded guilty to murder and his sentencing was set for February 11th of 2025.
Today, Romero appeared before justice Nigel Pilgrim who handed down his sentence with a starting point of 25 years, plus 2 more due to mitigating factors, a total of 27 years. But due to Romero's involvement in the prison rehabilitation program, and for his guilty plea, Justice Piligrim reduced his sentence by 7 years leaving him to serve 20 before he is eligible for parole. His sentence is to take effect from the time he was first remanded which dates back to April, 2022.
