Musk's Starlink Giving Internet Service Providers A Run For Their Money?
posted (February 28, 2025)
In January the PUC finally gave its approval for Elon Musk's Starlink internet service to become available in Belize, under three conditions: in unserved or underserved areas, on vessels and aircraft under Earth Station in-Motion regulations, and during natural disasters when other services are unavailable.

But recently we noticed that the ads for Starlink for Belize show that it's being offered for only $29.00 monthly. We asked the PM today who is responsible for the Public Utilities commission if these competitive rates create some concern for other internet providers in country - which also includes his family's business, Centaur. Here's what he told us.

John Briceno, Prime Minister
"Well I think what we have to do is we have to protect Belize first, when you look at Starlink you are dealing with the most wealthiest man in the world so he can come here and give away and drive everybody out of business and then increase the prices. What the PUC has done I've been informed that they have agreed that star link could operate but only in areas where there is no access, certain areas where there is no access for internet and we want to make it accessible to everybody so that is the position of the PUC."
