For weeks now, we've been reporting on the 3 American women who were found dead inside their hotel room at Royal Kahan Beach Resort. Today, the cops aren't any closer to figuring out their cause of death, as they are still awaiting the findings of toxicology tests that were performed on the bodies. However, while that investigation is taking place, the resort itself suddenly closed its doors temporarily. Courtney Menzies has this story.
Royal Kahan Beach Resort abruptly announced its closure on Friday.
The hotel's management informed this guest who was at the airport in the US that the decision was made 15 minutes prior and he would have to find alternative accommodations. They offered him a full refund to assist with the process.
Why the sudden closure? Well, it seems the police are still in the process of a deep and searching investigation.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"Our investigations continues in respect of that issue and the hotel decided on their own to close down for a week to allow investigators to go in and do what needs to be done."
Jules Vasquez:
"Are you all finding anything pointing to any specific single thing that could have led to these three deaths?"
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"Well, at this time no, we are still awaiting the toxicology report. That is going to shed light on whatever we need to know."
Jules Vasquez:
"But are you concerned, and I know you can't say too much because there's so little known, but so far do you believe there was an actor or agent who may have done something that even if it's selling them drugs that have led to their deaths or do you believe it was environmental or something within their own environment that produced it."
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I would rather await the toxicology report before I say anything in respect of that."
However, a red flag about carbon monoxide poisoning was raised by this guest in a Trip Advisor review of the resort. They mentioned that on February 18th, their detector "went off with levels above 400." They added quote, "despite informing the front desk, the staff seemed unfamiliar with the issue."
It's not corroborated by scientific testing but it does point plausibly to what could be a new theory. In a statement issued yesterday the family says quote, "The circumstances surrounding this tragedy remain unclear and suspicious, and we are seeking answers to understand what happened in Belize. We urge the authorities in Belize and in the United States to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation so that we may find the truth and justice." End quote.
For now, the department is receiving assistance from multiple agencies.
Jules Vasquez:
"It's a multiagency team I imagine."
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"Yes it is."
Jules Vasquez:
"I understand they're also sending public health in."
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"Public health, fire, environment, police, etc, yes."
We'll keep following the story.
