Sugar Crop Resumes But No Drastic Improvements Yet
posted (March 25, 2025)
Climate change has made for a topsy turvy world and this year the dry season has been very wet - causing delays and mud laden deliveries in the cane industry.

This has created a significant drop in sugar production for BSI after weather conditions forced them to shut down the mill and wait for the wet conditions to dry up.

Today the Director of SIRDI, the Sugar Industry Research and Development Institute, Marcus Osorio provided an update now that production has since resumed. He says that while they are milling again, it's too early to say that there has been any drastic improvement.

Marcus Osorio, Executive Director, SIRDI
"I can say that there has been some improvement. I think we have seen since we started, we have seen an improvement on cane quality. I think though there is still concern in terms of, for example, when we look at the purities to date, up to yesterday, the purities are at 79.21 overall."

"When we made the stop in, which was February 19th, at that time the purity was at 77, the overall. So from 77 to 79, we have improved two points. Then in terms of TCTS, at the stop of the suspension of the harvesting, our TCTS was over 14."

"Presently, we are at 13.34 overall. And I think it is important to mention that the TCTS to yesterday, for yesterday's milling, stood at 12.72, which, yes, there is an improvement, but the improvement is not what we would have expected."

"That maybe we would have been at around 11 TCTS at this time. It is improving, but the improvement is pretty much slow. And this is basically attributed to, and we also, I think it is important to mention that we do not anticipate a major improvement from now to the end of the crop."
